The transportation providers of YRC Worldwide Inc. participate in programs and processes for protecting and preserving the environment. These strategies have the twin goals of reducing our carbon footprint while optimizing our corporate resources. Our industry-leading companies effectively and aggressively promote greenhouse gas reduction strategies, waste reduction, and conservation across their daily operations.
2008 Destination Green Updates
- We continue to aggressively address greenhouse gas reduction strategies by limiting truck speeds to 62/63 mph, using hotel rooms for driver stays instead of idling our trucks overnight, extensive use of intermodal service with our railroad providers, set limits on daily idling with over the road and city operations, using environmentally efficient longer combination vehicles where allowed and practicing one of the most aggressive tire pressure inflation and monitoring programs in the industry.
- Our large scale network is set to go from efficient to hyper efficient as our new network integration strategy will reduce empty mile percentages further and will create new lane densities that optimize equipment utilization. Our network of service centers allows us to effectively “car pool” for shipments. Eliminating empty miles and optimizing equipment utilization have a substantial impact on decreasing our carbon footprint.
- Our newest vehicles with the most recent NOx and particulate matter reduction devices run the highest number of miles compared to other units in the fleet.
- We will soon introduce two diesel electric hybrids for testing in our fleet. These vehicles will be assigned to a city pick up and delivery center in a large metropolitan area. We are currently training the drivers in the area on how to optimize fuel efficiency with the hybrid trucks. We will assess the benefits of further vehicle deployment as this pilot project develops.
- This year we also have initiated purchase of fuel efficient tires that show potential for further increases in fuel efficiency and emissions reduction. These new fuel efficient tires will be phased into the fleet system wide. We will analyze and assess the benefits of this initiative in the next year.
- Recycling aluminum, steel and unusable cardboard dunnage, office paper, oil, antifreeze, cleaning solvents, tires and batteries.
- To reduce energy consumption, light bulb fixtures in buildings are recycled, and lighting fixtures are replaced with low-wattage lamps.
- Use of electronic bills of lading, invoices and other e-commerce tools is actively encouraged to reduce paper consumption for all supply-chain partners.
- To prevent unwanted products from entering the waste stream or disposal process, chemical shipments deemed unacceptable by a shipper or consignee are recovered, repackaged and offered for sale to the public through a physical location and on the Internet.
- Transportation services for product returns and reverse logistics offered by the YRC Worldwide companies prevent pollution and minimize waste in shipment movement.
- Biodiesel fuel is voluntarily used in the respective fleets at select sites across the United States, in addition to areas where use of biodiesel is mandated.
- Use of ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) at all company-owned fueling sites produces cleaner emissions of NOx (nitrogen oxides) and particulate matter. Also, all YRC Worldwide companies introduced low-emission diesel (LED) tractors into their respective fleets in 2007.
- New engine oil and lubricant technologies to extend service intervals, greatly reducing waste product generation, continue to be used and evaluated.
Real Commitment. Real Results.
We strive to be good stewards of earth’s natural resources. This is a commitment to our customers and employees that we take seriously. Efficient use of resources is good for the environment and good for our company. What does our commitment look like in real numbers? We estimate the strategies we deploy to increase fuel efficiency and decrease emissions result in a reduction of approximately one million tons of CO2 annually. These are real results with real benefits to our company and the environment. The most important commitments we make are championing sustainability and striving for continuous improvement. Our new network integration strategy will incorporate these commitments. As we establish our integrated network we will further reduce CO2 emissions. We will keep you updated on our progress. |
